PrEP Aware Week 2025: PrEP Revolution

October 20, 2025

By Lauren Jamieson, HIV Treatment & Prevention Program Manager, Evergreen Health

Each year at Evergreen, we celebrate PrEP Aware Week: a New York State health campaign that spreads the word about PrEP, the medication that can nearly eliminate your chances of becoming HIV positive.

This year’s theme, PrEP Revolution, celebrates a bold shift in how we approach sexual health, self-care, and HIV prevention. It’s about challenging outdated ideas, breaking down stigma, and empowering people of all ages, genders and backgrounds to take control of their health.

Whether you’re discovering your identity, embracing your sexuality, or simply choosing pleasure and safety on your terms, PrEP is part of the revolution.

Evergreen Health is Western New York’s leading provider of PrEP. Keep reading to learn why PrEP is safe, easy, and accessible, and how Evergreen can support you in starting your own sexual health revolution.

What is PrEP?

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that when taken as prescribed nearly eliminates a person’s chances of becoming HIV positive.

There are more ways to take PrEP now than ever, including a once-daily pill, event-based PrEP, and long-acting injectable options. PrEP is safe, and very few people experience side effects.

PrEP only prevents HIV and doesn’t prevent other sexually transmitted infections. Your provider can talk with you about an STI prevention strategy that works best for your life.

Who can take PrEP?

If you are HIV negative and want to take control of your sexual health, PrEP may be right for you.

While HIV is a treatable chronic illness, and people living with HIV can live full, healthy lives, taking PrEP to prevent HIV is a powerful prevention tool that provides peace of mind and self-control.

No matter your age, gender, race or background, you deserve access to HIV prevention. Whether you’re single, partnered, or have many partners, PrEP is a powerful tool for taking control of your health. PrEP Revolution is about freedom, choice, and empowerment at every stage of life.

You might benefit from PrEP if you:

  • have sex with multiple and/or anonymous partners
  • sometimes or often have sex without a condom
  • are not sure of your sexual partners’ HIV status
  • have recently been diagnosed with an STI/STD
  • use injection and/or mood-altering drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine or ecstasy

You must have a negative HIV status to take PrEP. Your provider will test you for HIV to confirm your status before starting you on PrEP.

How do I get started with PrEP?
