Doctor’s Note: August 2026 reminders from Evergreen Health

Make sure your contact info is up-to-date in Medicaid so you don’t miss important updates. 

Starting on January 1, 2027, a new federal rule will require some people who have Medicaid coverage to show they are working, going to school, volunteering in the community, or participating in job training to keep their health coverage.  

What does this mean for you?  

If work requirements for Medicaid coverage apply to you, the New York State Department of Health marketplace will send you a notice by mail (or email if you chose electronic notices) about upcoming changes by Sept. 1, 2026.   

If you’re enrolled in Medicaid through the marketplace, you need to make sure your contact information is up to date for the account, including phone number, email, and home address so you can receive important information from the state.  

If you are enrolled in Medicaid through the marketplace, you can update your contact information in these ways:  

• Go to your New York State of Health account at nystateofhealth.ny.gov.  

• Meet with an enrollment assistor who can help you update your account.  

• Call the New York State of Health Customer Service Center at 1-855-355-5777 (TTY: 1-800-662-1220).

Dr. Shyamal Majithia 

Dr. Shyamal Majithia has stepped into the role of Primary & Specialty Care Medical Director here at Evergreen Health. Originally from Canada, he’s been a proud Buffalonian for the past 10 years. Dr. Majithia is a board-certified Family Physician who trained at St. George’s University in Grenada and completed his residency at the University at Buffalo through ECMC.  

Dr. Majithia comes from a background in urgent care and has been working behind the scenes to build out the clinical infrastructure that helps our care teams deliver the best patient care — standardizing protocols, improving workflows, and making sure we’re all set up for success. Outside of work, you’ll find him cooking, planning his next trip, or — like many of us — riding the emotional rollercoaster that is Buffalo Bills season. 

Kaylan Mayo, PA 

Kaylan Mayo, PA, has joined our 3297 Bailey Avenue Primary & Specialty Care team. Originally from Baltimore, MD, Kaylan grew up as a Baltimore Ravens fan but quickly joined the Bills Mafia after moving to Buffalo. Kaylan attended Penn State College of Medicine. She is passionate about providing high-quality healthcare to our patients and is excited to join our team. She is now accepting new patients and is looking forward to meeting you.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Overdose Awareness Day: August 31 

Each August 31 we commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day to bring awareness to the overdose epidemic our Western New York community continues to face, and to promote overdose prevention without stigma.  

We’re here to support people who use drugs with free harm reduction tools to reduce the risk of overdose, as well as substance use treatment for people who want to reduce their use or stop using. 

Carrying Narcan (naloxone nasal spray) with you is an easy step that anyone can take to help save someone’s life from an opioid overdose. Stop by any Evergreen Health harm reduction center for free Narcan, as well as a free 10-minute free training on how to use it.  

We have harm reduction centers in our locations at 206 S. Elmwood Ave in Buffalo, and 320 Prather Ave in Jamestown, as well as a Mobile Unit that travels throughout WNY.
