Supporting women’s health and wellness, unconditionally

March 8, 2024

Evergreen Health Women's Health and Wellness International Women's Day 2024

Each year on March 8, Evergreen Health is proud to celebrate International Women’s Day, an annual event that honors the contributions and lived experiences of women throughout the world while also moving us to accelerate steps toward worldwide equality for women.

We’re proud to be a place where women from all walks of life – transgender, gender non-conforming and cisgender women of all ages, races and backgrounds — can come to receive unconditionally affirming, non-judgmental and accessible medical and supportive services. Read on to see some of the ways we care for the health and wellness of women at Evergreen and our affiliates.

Primary care

Our adult and pediatric primary care providers understand the unique health and social needs of women and girls. Our primary care providers know how health conditions like heart disease, HIV and diabetes can affect women differently, and are here to support women’s health concerns throughout various stages in their lives.

We specialize in caring for the unique health and wellness needs of women of transgender experience and gender non-conforming (TGNC) women. In addition to gender-affirming primary care, we’re here to support TGNC women with transition resources like informed consent-based HRT, linkage to free legal name change support, and linkage to gender-affirming surgery providers.

Gynecological care

We provide culturally sensitive and trauma informed gynecological care to women, transgender and non-binary patients. Our services include annual pelvic exams, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, HIV prevention and care, contraception, family planning and treatment for abnormal pap smears.

Hepatitis C care

Hepatitis C is an infection that leads to swelling of the liver. Hepatitis C can affect people of all genders, and there is a cure for Hep C, but the only way to know if you have it is to get tested. The CDC also recommends that pregnant people should get tested for Hep C during each pregnancy. We offer Hepatitis C testing and treatment, along with safer sex supplies and education to prevent the transmission of Hep C.

HIV prevention and care

HIV can affect people of any gender, and we’re here to make sure that women get the HIV prevention and care that they need.

Evergreen is the leading provider in Western New York of PrEP, the medication that when taken as prescribed greatly reduces a person’s risk of acquiring HIV. If you’re a woman who is sexually active and want to reduce your risk of acquiring HIV, ask your primary care doctor if PrEP is right for you.

We also provide a wealth of medical and supportive services for women who are living with HIV, from transportation and housing assistance to support groups and linkage to other services.

Mental health care

Evergreen’s caring mental health providers understand the ways that mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, grief and trauma can affect women differently. All of our providers have been trained in trauma-informed and gender-affirming care for transgender, gender non-conforming and cisgender women.

Community and support for women

The Pride Center, an affiliate of Evergreen Health, provides social groups and programs that help women in Buffalo’s LGBTQ+ community connect with each other in a safe and affirming space that’s specifically for them and encourages them to grow. Check out the Pride Center’s calendar to see when you can join an upcoming event.

Sapphic Space – a monthly group for queer women and women of trans experience to connect and socialize with sapphic and LGBTQ+ women peers, do fun activities together, and access LGBTQ+ health and wellness resources.

Out & About—a monthly group for bisexual, pansexual and queer people to connect and socialize with queer peers, do fun activities together, and access LGBTQ+ health and wellness resources.
